Cannabis & Creativity: How NY Artists Use It Responsibly

Silly Nice explores how New York artists use cannabis responsibly to fuel creative flow — and which small-batch products may support your creative practice.

Where Art, Culture, and Cannabis Meet in New York

We built Silly Nice from Harlem — one of the most creatively charged neighborhoods on the planet. This is a place where music, visual art, fashion, literature, and food have always collided and produced something entirely new. From the Harlem Renaissance to hip-hop, from jazz clubs to corner murals, New York has always been a city that creates. And for a lot of people who live and work in that creative world, cannabis has been part of the ritual. Not a crutch — a companion. We see it every day, and we feel it ourselves.

Since we launched in March 2024 and grew to over 150 licensed New York adult-use dispensaries, we've had the privilege of building real relationships with the people who support us — musicians, painters, photographers, writers, designers, cooks, performers, and builders of every kind. What we keep hearing is the same thing: cannabis, used intentionally and responsibly by adults 21 and older, can create the mental conditions where creativity feels more accessible. We're not making medical claims — we're listening to our community and reflecting their experience back honestly.

A City That Has Always Created Under Pressure

New York doesn't make it easy to slow down. The city moves fast, rent is expensive, the noise never fully stops. For a lot of creative people, the challenge isn't finding inspiration — it's finding the quiet inside themselves to actually hear it. That's where intentional cannabis use enters the conversation. Many adults in our community describe using small amounts of cannabis to step outside the mental noise, soften their internal critic, and settle into a more present, receptive state before they create. That's a personal experience, not a guaranteed outcome — but it's a real one that deserves an honest conversation.

What Responsible Creative Cannabis Use Actually Looks Like

We want to be real with our community about this. Responsible use isn't just a legal disclaimer — it's something we believe in from the inside out. We're a Veteran-owned, Black-owned, family-operated brand. Several of us on this team come from backgrounds where we've seen substances used irresponsibly and what that costs people and communities. So when we talk about cannabis and creativity, we're not glamorizing overconsumption. We're talking about adults making informed, intentional choices with quality products.

Responsible creative use looks like this: you know your tolerance, you choose your setting deliberately, you start low and go slow — especially with high-potency products — and you never get behind a wheel. It means using cannabis as a tool that serves your work, not one that replaces the work itself. Many artists we talk to are specific about when and how they consume: some use it before a brainstorm session, some after a long day to decompress and let ideas surface naturally, and some use it as a bridge between their analytical mind and their intuitive one.

Set, Setting, and Intention Matter

Cannabis is not one-size-fits-all. Your environment, your mindset going in, your relationship with the product, and your personal biology all shape the experience. A painter in a sunlit Brooklyn studio is going to have a different experience than someone in a loud environment feeling stressed before they consume. We always encourage our community to think about the set and setting before anything else — create conditions that support what you're going for. Have your materials ready. Have a creative prompt or direction in mind. Give yourself permission to make something imperfect. Then, if you choose to incorporate cannabis, let it be part of a supportive ritual rather than a substitute for one.

Products That NY Creatives Are Actually Reaching For

We take a lot of pride in the products we put into the world. Every single one of our products is small-batch, independently lab-tested, and sustainably packaged — because we believe the people who trust us with their experience deserve to know exactly what they're getting. All lab results are posted at sillynice.com/menu, and that transparency is non-negotiable for us.

Our Diamond-Frosted and Live Resin Infused Flower — 3.5 grams at 51.22% THC for $60 — is one of our most beloved products for creative sessions. The live resin infusion preserves the full terpene profile of the plant, meaning the experience is rich, layered, and aromatic. Artists who work with their hands — painters, ceramicists, illustrators — often describe flower as their preferred format because of the ritual involved: grinding, rolling or packing, the pause it creates before the work begins.

Vapes for the On-the-Go Creative Life

New York creatives don't always work in studios. They work in coffee shops, on rooftops, in rehearsal spaces, in the backs of cabs between gigs. Our 510 Vape Cartridge in Pink Stardust — 1 gram at 81.96% THC for $40 — offers consistency and discretion for adults who want a precise, portable experience. And our 2G All-In-One Vape in Alaskan Thunder Fuck at 82.46% THC for $80 is a favorite for people who want longevity and reliability without juggling extra hardware. Both are lab-tested, clean, and built to deliver exactly what's on the label — every time.

High-Potency Concentrates and the Creative Mind

Not every creative person is new to cannabis — and for experienced adults who know their tolerance well, our concentrates open up a different kind of conversation. Our Diamond Powder — 1 gram at 86.24% THC for $50 — is designed for people who want maximum potency in a precise, versatile format. It can be sprinkled on flower or used on its own, and a little absolutely goes a long way. We always remind our community: with concentrates this potent, intentional use is everything.

Our Bubble Hash at 53.32% THC for $44 and our Frosted Hash Ball at 67.34% THC for $50 are crafted for those who appreciate the craft and tradition of hash-making. These aren't shortcuts — they're products that take real skill to produce at this quality level. Musicians and producers in our community have told us that hash, in particular, has a warmth and depth that feels different from other formats — more grounding, more physical. Again, that's personal experience, not a promise. But it's worth knowing your options.

Start Low, Know Your Limits, Respect the Craft

We cannot say this enough: with any of our high-potency products, starting low is the wisest move — especially if you're newer to cannabis or returning after a break. Nobody's creative output has ever been improved by accidentally overconsumingand spending the session on the couch. Cannabis is for adults 21 and over, and it is not appropriate for everyone. Respect your own body, learn from each experience, and build your personal protocol over time. That's what responsible use looks like in practice.

The Cultural Weight of a Black-Owned Cannabis Brand in New York

We'd be telling an incomplete story if we talked about cannabis and creativity in New York without acknowledging the history. Black artists and musicians — jazz musicians, blues singers, hip-hop pioneers — have had cannabis woven into their creative culture for generations. And for generations, those same communities were disproportionately targeted, arrested, and incarcerated for the exact same substance that is now legal and profitable in New York State. We don't let that history sit in the background. It lives in why we built Silly Nice.

As a Black-owned and Veteran-owned brand operating out of Harlem, we carry a responsibility that feels bigger than business. We're here to build something that reinvests in the community, honors the culture, and makes sure that the people who paid the highest price for cannabis prohibition are now part of — and benefiting from — cannabis legalization. When you buy Silly Nice, you're not just getting a premium product. You're supporting that mission directly. That matters to us more than almost anything.

Supporting Artists Means Supporting Equity Too

The New York creative community has always been diverse, scrappy, and underpaid. Artists hustle in a city that can feel like it's always just out of reach. We built this brand to be a part of that community authentically — not to market to it from the outside. When we show up at events, collaborate with artists, and talk to the people who carry our products home, we're building real relationships. We're not a corporation that discovered a demographic. We're neighbors, veterans, and family members who made something real and want to share it with people who deserve quality.

A Creative Community Deserves Honest, Quality Cannabis

We started Silly Nice in March 2024 with a simple conviction: the people in our community deserve cannabis that is transparent, tested, potent, and made with integrity. We've grown to over 150 licensed adult-use dispensaries across New York because that conviction resonates. Whether you're a visual artist in Washington Heights, a musician in Bed-Stuy, a writer in Astoria, or a photographer in the South Bronx — if cannabis is part of how you access your creative self, you should have access to the best version of it.

Cannabis is not a magic creativity switch. It doesn't write your lyrics or mix your palette for you. But for many adults who use it responsibly and intentionally, it may help create the mental conditions — the ease, the openness, the willingness to play — that make creative work feel more natural. That's worth honoring. That's worth building a brand around. And that's why we show up every single day the way we do.

If you're ready to explore what we've built, all of our products, lab results, and dispensary locations are available right here. We're proud of every gram, every cartridge, and every relationship we've built along the way. Find us, try us, and tell us what you think. This community built Silly Nice — and this community keeps us going.
