We Built Silly Nice With the Planet in Mind
When we launched Silly Nice in March 2024, we made a promise to ourselves and to our community: everything we do would reflect our values. Not just in the quality of what's inside the jar, but in how we wrap it up and send it out into the world. We're a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, family-operated brand rooted right here in Harlem, NYC — and for us, being responsible to our community has always meant being responsible to the environment those same people live in.
Sustainable packaging wasn't a marketing decision. It was a foundational one. From day one, we understood that the cannabis industry has an opportunity that most industries never get — to build better habits from the start, before the bad ones calcify. We didn't want to be another brand that prints 'green' on the label while quietly filling landfills. We wanted to do the actual work. And we still do.
What Sustainable Packaging Actually Means in Cannabis
Sustainable cannabis packaging refers to materials and design choices that minimize environmental harm across the full lifecycle of a product — from manufacturing to disposal. That includes using recycled or recyclable materials, reducing the volume of packaging used, eliminating unnecessary plastics, and selecting suppliers who operate with environmental accountability. In the cannabis space specifically, this is complicated by regulatory requirements around child-resistant and tamper-evident packaging, which often pushes brands toward heavier, multi-layer plastics. Navigating those constraints responsibly takes real commitment and real creativity.
The Problem With Packaging in the Cannabis Industry
Let's be honest about where we come from. Cannabis packaging has a waste problem. Walk through any New York neighborhood after a weekend and you'll see discarded vape carts, plastic pop-tops, and child-resistant bags that aren't going anywhere fast. The industry, still finding its footing in legalized markets across the country, has leaned heavily on single-use plastics and oversized packaging to meet compliance standards. The result? An enormous environmental footprint that too few brands are talking about openly.
We've seen the stats, and they're sobering. Some estimates suggest the cannabis industry generates tens of thousands of tons of plastic waste annually in the United States alone. Much of that waste comes from packaging that isn't recyclable through standard municipal programs, meaning it almost always ends up in a landfill or worse — as litter. For a plant that literally grows from the earth, that's a painful irony. We think the community deserves better than that, and so does the earth.
Why This Hits Different in Communities Like Ours
In Harlem and neighborhoods like it across New York City, environmental justice isn't an abstract concept — it's lived experience. Black and brown communities have historically borne the heaviest burden of industrial pollution, inadequate waste management, and environmental neglect. As a brand that comes directly from that experience, we feel the weight of that reality every time we make a packaging decision. We're not going to contribute to that cycle. We're going to be part of breaking it.

How We Package Our Products With Purpose
Every Silly Nice product — from our Diamond-Frosted & Live Resin Infused Flower to our Diamond Powder, Bubble Hash, Frosted Hash Ball, and vape products — is packaged with sustainability in mind. We source materials designed to reduce our carbon footprint while still meeting the child-resistant compliance standards required by New York State. We use right-sized containers that don't pad our environmental impact just to look bigger on a shelf. The product inside speaks for itself. We don't need unnecessary bulk to make our point.
Our 510 Vape Cartridges, like the Pink Stardust at 81.96% THC, and our 2G All-In-One Vape in Alaskan Thunder Fuck at 82.46% THC are designed to minimize hardware waste by maximizing what's in each unit. Fewer partial products thrown away means less waste overall. Our 3.5g flower jars are sealed and structured for reuse. Our concentrates — the 1g Diamond Powder at 86.24% THC, the 1g Bubble Hash at 53.32% THC, the 1g Frosted Hash Ball at 67.34% THC — all come in compact, thoughtfully designed packaging that we constantly evaluate for improvement.
Small Batch Is Inherently More Sustainable
There's something most people don't think about when they hear 'small-batch': it's actually one of the most environmentally responsible ways to produce cannabis. When we make smaller runs, we reduce overproduction, which means less product waste, less packaging waste, and less energy consumed in the manufacturing process. We're not printing a million units of something and hoping it sells. We're making exactly what we know our community wants and needs, in quantities that reflect real demand. That discipline extends from our grow operations all the way to the shelf.
The Environmental Benefits Are Real — and They Stack Up
When sustainable packaging practices are adopted across a brand's full product line, the environmental benefits compound quickly. Reduced plastic usage means less petroleum extracted and processed. Lighter packaging reduces transportation fuel consumption. Recyclable materials lower the volume of waste entering landfills. Minimal packaging design cuts down on the raw material inputs required before a product ever reaches a customer's hands. These aren't hypothetical gains — they're measurable, meaningful reductions in environmental harm that we take seriously in every product cycle.
For a brand now carried in over 150 licensed adult-use dispensaries across New York, those decisions scale. When we make a better packaging choice at Silly Nice, it multiplies across thousands of units moving through the city every month. We think about that. We talk about it as a team. Because every small decision made right has a ripple effect, and we want our ripples to be ones our community can be proud of.
Transparency Supports Accountability
We believe in showing our work. That's why all of our products are independently lab-tested, with results available publicly at sillynice.com/menu. That same commitment to transparency extends to how we talk about our packaging choices. We don't want to greenwash anything. We acknowledge that there is more work to do — the entire cannabis industry is still evolving, and perfect sustainability isn't possible overnight. But we're moving in the right direction, we're doing it intentionally, and we're being honest about where we stand.

What You Can Do As a Consumer
Sustainable cannabis isn't just a brand responsibility — it's a community one. As adults 21 and older choosing what products to support, you have real power in shaping how this industry evolves. When you buy from brands that prioritize sustainable packaging, you're sending a signal. When you ask dispensary staff which brands are operating responsibly, you're creating accountability. When you dispose of your packaging thoughtfully — checking local recycling guidelines, reusing containers where possible — you're doing your part.
We love seeing our community rep Silly Nice, but we love it even more when people tell us they chose us because of what we stand for — not just what we grow. That's the kind of loyalty that means something. It's the kind of relationship that connects back to our Harlem roots, to our military service, to the family values that drive every decision we make at this company. When you support us, you're supporting something bigger than a product. You're supporting a way of doing business that we believe the world needs more of.
Ask Questions at the Dispensary Counter
One of the most powerful things you can do as a consumer is ask questions. Next time you're at one of the 150+ licensed New York dispensaries carrying Silly Nice, ask your budtender about packaging materials. Ask which brands are being transparent about their environmental practices. Ask what the dispensary itself does with returned packaging or waste. These conversations matter. They push the industry toward better standards, and they help conscious consumers make choices that align with their values. We're happy to be held to that standard. We encourage it.
This Is Part of Who We Are — Not Just What We Sell
We've said it before and we'll keep saying it: Silly Nice isn't just a cannabis brand. We're a statement. Built by Black founders, shaped by military discipline, grounded in Harlem, and driven by the belief that doing things right matters more than doing them fast. Sustainable packaging is one thread in that larger fabric. It connects to our commitment to quality — only small-batch, lab-tested products. It connects to our commitment to community — no shortcuts that harm the people and neighborhoods we love. And it connects to our commitment to legacy — building something our families can be proud of long after the initial launch buzz fades.
We're not here to be the loudest brand in the room. We're here to be the most intentional. Every gram of Diamond Powder, every jar of Bubble Hash, every Frosted Hash Ball, every flower pack, every cart — it all carries the weight of what we believe in. We chose this industry because we saw an opportunity to do it differently. And 'differently' means not leaving the planet worse off in our wake. It means treating the environment with the same respect we bring to our craft, our customers, and our culture.
The Road Ahead for Silly Nice and Sustainable Cannabis
We're always learning and always improving. As sustainable material technologies advance — compostable films, hemp-based packaging, closed-loop recycling programs — we intend to be among the first brands in New York to adopt what works. We're in conversations. We're doing the research. And we're committed to being vocal about it, because the more brands in this space hold themselves publicly accountable, the faster the entire industry moves toward practices that protect our planet, our communities, and the future of legal cannabis in New York and beyond.
