We've Been Watching This Change Happen In Real Time
When we launched Silly Nice in March 2024, we weren't just starting a cannabis brand — we were stepping into a movement that had been building for decades across New York State. We are a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, family-run operation born and rooted in Harlem, and when legalization passed, we understood what it meant in a way that went beyond business. It meant that communities like ours — communities that had been disproportionately impacted by prohibition — were finally being invited into a legal industry that had long excluded them.
From the corner of 125th Street to the neighborhoods of Buffalo, Albany, Rochester, and beyond, cannabis legalization is doing something this state has never quite seen before. It's changing the physical landscape of neighborhoods, shifting economic realities for small business owners, and reopening conversations about justice, ownership, and belonging. We are living inside that change every day, and we want to talk to you about what we're seeing — honestly, directly, from us to you.
Legal Cannabis in New York: A Quick Recap of Where We Are
New York officially legalized adult-use cannabis through the Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act in March 2021. Adults 21 and older can now legally purchase, possess, and consume cannabis products from licensed dispensaries. Since then, the Office of Cannabis Management has been working to build out a regulated market, and while the rollout has had its challenges, licensed dispensaries have been opening steadily across the state. We are now proud to have our small-batch products available in over 150 licensed adult-use dispensaries across New York — and that number keeps growing. This isn't just progress on paper. It's real change on real streets.
Dispensaries Are Reshaping Commercial Corridors
One of the most visible signs of legalization is simply the look of our commercial blocks. Licensed dispensaries are opening in storefronts that previously sat vacant, in neighborhoods that had been hit hard by retail closures and economic disinvestment. In Harlem alone, we've watched dispensaries open on blocks that once struggled to attract any new business at all. There's something powerful about seeing a legal cannabis shop with proper lighting, knowledgeable staff, and quality products open where a liquor store or a check-cashing spot used to be.
These aren't just aesthetic changes. Dispensaries create jobs — budtenders, managers, delivery drivers, security staff, operations teams. They generate sales tax revenue that flows back into local governments. They attract foot traffic that benefits neighboring businesses. And when those dispensaries are intentionally stocked with products from small, independent, community-tied brands like ours, that economic ripple runs even deeper. Every time someone buys our Diamond Powder or our 2G All-In-One Vape from a Harlem dispensary, some of that money stays in the neighborhood.
Beyond the Storefront: What Licensed Dispensaries Actually Signal
A licensed dispensary is more than a shop. It's a signal to a neighborhood that something has shifted — that a product once criminalized is now treated as a legitimate consumer good with safety standards, lab testing, and regulatory oversight. When our customers walk into a licensed shop and pick up one of our products, they can see the independently verified lab results right on the packaging and at sillynice.com/menu. That transparency wasn't available when cannabis existed only in the shadows. Legalization made it possible to actually know what you're consuming — and that matters.
New York's cannabis law was written with social equity at its core. The Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary program was specifically designed to give people from communities most harmed by the War on Drugs — including those with prior cannabis convictions — a first path into the legal market. That intent is real, and we respect it deeply. As a Black-owned brand founded by a Veteran from Harlem, we know exactly which communities bore the brunt of decades of criminalization. We were those communities.
But we also have to be honest: the implementation has been uneven. Many social equity applicants have faced financing gaps, bureaucratic delays, and competition from operators with far greater resources. The vision of a cannabis industry that repairs the harm done to Black and Brown communities can only be realized if those communities actually own a meaningful share of what gets built. That's why we're committed not just to making great products, but to being visible proof that Black-owned cannabis brands can compete, grow, and lead in this market.
Why Ownership Matters More Than Access
There's a difference between a community being allowed to buy cannabis legally and a community actually owning the businesses that sell it. Access is a starting point — but ownership is where generational impact lives. When you buy from Silly Nice, you're supporting a family-operated brand that reinvests in its community, hires from its community, and tells its story through its community. We think about that with every small batch we produce, every dispensary relationship we build, and every conversation we have with the people who support us. Your purchase has a direction. We want you to know where it goes.

Culture, Community, and the Normalization of Cannabis
New York has always had a complex relationship with cannabis culture. It's been woven into the music coming out of the Bronx and Harlem, into the art galleries of Brooklyn, into the late nights and early mornings of this city. But there was always a shadow over it — the fear of arrest, the judgment, the stigma that fell hardest on Black and Brown people while others consumed freely. Legalization hasn't erased that history, but it is slowly changing the cultural temperature. Conversations about cannabis are happening at dinner tables, in offices, and in community centers in ways they never quite did before.
We're also seeing New Yorkers of all ages — from 21-year-olds exploring adult-use cannabis for the first time to adults in their 50s and 60s returning to something they put down years ago — engaging with legal cannabis as a normal part of their lifestyle. Cannabis is for adults 21 and older, full stop. But within that, the range of people curious about quality products, transparent sourcing, and honest information is wider than many people assume. That's exactly the community we built Silly Nice to serve.
Quality Culture: Why What's in the Package Matters
Part of what legalization unlocks is a genuine quality culture — the ability for brands to compete on the merit of their products in a transparent, tested environment. Every single product we make at Silly Nice is small-batch crafted, independently lab-tested, and sustainably packaged. Whether it's our Diamond-Frosted & Live Resin Infused Flower at 51.22% THC, our Bubble Hash at 53.32% THC, or our Frosted Hash Ball at 67.34% THC — those numbers are verified, not marketing language. Our 510 Vape Cartridge in Pink Stardust comes in at 81.96% THC, and our 2G All-In-One Alaskan Thunder Fuck vape hits 82.46% THC. These are real numbers from real lab reports that you can verify yourself at sillynice.com/menu. That's the standard legalization should hold everyone to.

Small Brands, Big Stakes: The Independent Cannabis Economy
One of the most important — and least talked about — stories of New York cannabis legalization is the role of small, independent brands in shaping the character of this market. Multi-state operators and large corporations have the capital to move fast and occupy shelf space aggressively. But what they don't have is what we have: a specific story, a specific community, and products made with genuine intention and craft. Legalization created the legal framework for a brand like Silly Nice to even exist in this space. Going from concept to being in 150-plus licensed New York dispensaries in our first year tells us the market is hungry for something real.
When communities support independent, local, and minority-owned cannabis brands, they're participating in a different kind of economy — one where profits don't simply flow to faceless shareholders but cycle back through the neighborhood. Our Diamond Powder at $50 per gram and our 2G All-In-One at $80 are priced to be competitive in the market while maintaining the quality standards we refuse to compromise on. We're not trying to be the cheapest option. We're trying to be the most honest one.
Dispensary Relationships as Community Infrastructure
The partnerships we've built with licensed dispensaries across New York aren't just distribution deals — they're community relationships. Every shop that carries Silly Nice is a place where someone can walk in and connect with a brand that reflects their city, their culture, and their values. We take those relationships seriously. We show up. We support the shops that support us. And we're deeply grateful to the dispensary owners and staff across the state who have made space on their shelves for a young, independent, Harlem-born brand like ours. That network is how communities win in the legal cannabis economy.
Looking Forward: The New York Cannabis Story Is Still Being Written
We're still in the early chapters of what cannabis legalization means for New York State. Regulations will evolve, the market will mature, and some of the early chaos will settle into something more sustainable. But the decisions made right now — about who owns dispensaries, which brands get shelf space, which communities benefit from the tax revenue, and how enforcement is handled — will determine whether legalization truly lives up to its social equity promises or becomes another economic wave that washes past the people it was supposed to lift.
We're optimistic. Not naively — we've seen too much of how systems work to be naive — but genuinely. Because we've also seen what's possible when communities organize, when Black and Veteran entrepreneurs get real opportunities, and when consumers make intentional choices with their dollars. Cannabis legalization in New York is changing neighborhoods. We intend to be part of making sure it changes them for the better. Thank you for riding with us. This is only the beginning.
