How Cannabis Legalization Is Changing NYC & NY State

Silly Nice explores how cannabis legalization is reshaping New York neighborhoods — economically, culturally, and for communities that needed it most.

We've Watched This City Change — And We're Part of It

When we launched Silly Nice in March of 2024, New York's legal cannabis market was still finding its footing. Dispensaries were opening in neighborhoods that had never seen anything like them. Conversations that used to happen in whispers were suddenly happening out loud — in barbershops, in bodegas, at the dinner table. Something real was shifting. And we, a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, family-run brand built right here in Harlem, were determined to be part of that shift — not just as bystanders, but as builders.

Cannabis legalization in New York State isn't just a policy story. It's a neighborhood story. It's about who gets to participate in a legal industry after decades of a war on drugs that devastated Black and brown communities. It's about economic opportunity, community healing, and what it looks like when a state tries — imperfectly, but earnestly — to make things more equitable. We want to talk about all of it honestly, because that's the only way we know how to do things.

Why This Moment Matters to Us Personally

We didn't start Silly Nice in a vacuum. We started it because we saw a once-in-a-generation window — a chance for people who look like us, who come from where we come from, to build something legitimate in an industry that was already generating billions. Harlem raised us. The community holds us. And every small-batch product we put out — independently lab-tested, transparently labeled, sustainably packaged — is our way of saying: we belong here, and we're doing this right.

The Economic Ripple Effects Are Already Showing

Legal cannabis is creating jobs across New York State in ways that go far beyond the dispensary counter. Growers, processors, lab technicians, packaging designers, delivery drivers, marketers, compliance experts — the industry is building an ecosystem. In communities that have historically faced higher unemployment rates, this represents real opportunity. We see it in the brands being launched, the storefronts opening, the conversations shifting from survival to growth.

For us specifically, being in 150+ licensed New York adult-use dispensaries means we're part of a supply chain that touches neighborhoods from Buffalo to Brooklyn, from Albany to the South Bronx. Every unit of our Diamond Powder — 86.24% THC, $50 for a full gram — that moves off a shelf represents a transaction in a legal, regulated, tax-generating market. That's tax revenue that stays in New York. That matters to us as New Yorkers, not just as a brand.

What Social Equity Was Supposed to Mean

New York's Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) was written with social equity at its center. Priority licensing for individuals from communities most harmed by cannabis prohibition was a bold, meaningful promise. The execution has been messy — delayed licenses, legal battles, illicit market competition — but the intention was right. We believe that intention still matters, and we believe the community has to keep holding the state accountable to it. We'll keep doing our part by running the kind of brand that reflects those values in everything we do.

Neighborhoods Are Being Redefined by Dispensaries

Walk through almost any major New York City neighborhood today and you'll find licensed dispensaries operating alongside longtime businesses — nail salons, laundromats, restaurants, bodegas. What's striking isn't just the presence of cannabis retail; it's how it's being done. Many of the best licensed spots feel like community anchors — well-designed, professionally staffed, community-engaged. This is a far cry from the back-room, hush-hush culture that cannabis lived in for so long in this city.

We've visited a lot of the dispensaries that carry our products, from Manhattan to Queens to Long Island. What we see are operators who care — about their customers, about their communities, about getting it right. That gives us real pride. When an adult 21 or older walks into one of those stores and picks up our Frosted Hash Ball — 67.34% THC, $50, made in small batches — they're participating in something that wasn't possible legally just a few years ago. That's not small.

The Illicit Market Problem Isn't Going Away on Its Own

Let's be real — the unlicensed market in New York City is still enormous. Smoke shops selling unregulated products with no lab testing and no accountability are everywhere, and they undercut licensed brands on price. This isn't just a competitive issue — it's a public trust issue. When someone buys from an unlicensed seller, they have no idea what's in that product. When they buy from us, they can go to sillynice.com/menu and pull up the actual lab results. That transparency is non-negotiable for us. The legal market wins long-term when it earns trust — and we earn trust by being honest.

Culture and Cannabis: New York Was Always Ahead

New York has always had a deep, unspoken relationship with cannabis. From the jazz clubs of Harlem in the 1930s to the hip-hop culture that defined the city for decades, cannabis has been woven into the creative and social fabric of this place for generations. What's changing now isn't the culture — it's the context. For the first time, the culture and the law are aligning. And for communities that bore the brunt of criminalization, that alignment means something profound.

As a brand rooted in Harlem, we feel the weight and the joy of that simultaneously. We make products like our 2G All-In-One Vape in Alaskan Thunder Fuck — 82.46% THC, $80 — for adults 21 and older who want a premium experience they can trust. We make our 510 Vape Cartridge in Pink Stardust — 81.96% THC, $40 — for the person who wants something sleek, reliable, and real. These aren't just products. They're our contribution to a culture that's finally being celebrated in the light.

What Black Ownership Actually Changes in This Space

When Black entrepreneurs own cannabis companies — really own them, operate them, build them — something changes about who the industry serves and how. We don't just create products for our community; we create them with our community in mind. Our quality standards, our pricing, our packaging, our storytelling — all of it reflects a worldview shaped by who we are and where we come from. We think that makes us better at what we do. And we think it matters for the industry as a whole that voices like ours are part of the conversation.

Quality, Transparency, and What We Owe the Consumer

One of the most meaningful changes legalization brings is accountability. In the licensed market, every product has to be tested. Every label has to be accurate. Every batch has to meet state standards. For us, that baseline was never enough — we go further. Our Diamond-Frosted & Live Resin Infused Flower at 51.22% THC, our Bubble Hash at 53.32% THC — every number you see on our packaging corresponds to a real lab result from an independent, accredited testing facility. We believe consumers deserve to know exactly what they're getting.

We also believe in small-batch production because it lets us maintain quality in a way that scaled-up, mass-market production simply can't. When you pick up a Silly Nice product at one of our 150+ dispensary partners across New York, you're getting something that was made with intention and care — not pumped out by the thousand. That's a promise we made at the beginning and have no intention of breaking.

Sustainable Packaging Is Part of the Story Too

New York City is a place that has always had to reckon with its own footprint. As a brand operating in this city, we take sustainability seriously — not as a marketing line, but as a genuine operating principle. Our packaging is designed to minimize waste without sacrificing the presentation and protection our products need. When legalization opens up the market, it also opens up the responsibility to do things better. We accepted that responsibility from day one.

Where New York Goes From Here — And Where We'll Be

New York's cannabis market is still young. There will be more dispensaries, more brands, more regulation updates, more growing pains. The illicit market will shrink as the legal market matures and becomes more accessible. Social equity provisions will either be honored or they'll be fought for — and we'll be in that fight either way. The state has a real opportunity here to show what cannabis legalization can look like when it's done with intention and integrity. We're watching, we're participating, and we're not going anywhere.

For us, this isn't just about building a cannabis brand. It's about building something that represents what's possible when the people who were most impacted by prohibition are given a fair shot at participating in what comes next. From our family to yours — across Harlem, across the five boroughs, across every neighborhood in this state where our products are sold — we're grateful you're on this ride with us. We built Silly Nice for this community, and we'll keep earning your trust one small batch at a time.
