Harlem Has Always Been a Place Where Black Business Thrives
We didn't land in Harlem by accident. We came up here, we built here, and when it came time to launch Silly Nice in March 2024, there was never a question about where this brand would call home. Harlem has been the heartbeat of Black American culture, commerce, and creativity for over a century — from the Renaissance that redefined art and literature in the 1920s, to the jazz clubs on Lenox Avenue, to the generations of Black-owned barbershops, restaurants, and boutiques that have kept this neighborhood alive and vibrant through every economic shift this city has ever thrown at it.
When New York State legalized adult-use cannabis, Harlem was ready. Not because cannabis was new here — anybody who grew up in this neighborhood knows that conversation has been going on for decades — but because the infrastructure of Black entrepreneurship that has defined Harlem for generations gave founders like us both a blueprint and a community to build toward. We are part of that continuum. Silly Nice is a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, family-operated brand, and every decision we make is rooted in that identity and in this place.
The Renaissance Roots of Black Business Culture
The Harlem Renaissance wasn't just an artistic movement — it was an economic declaration. Black entrepreneurs built publishing houses, record labels, salons, and supper clubs that competed on a national stage while staying deeply community-rooted. That ethos never left. It evolved. And today, it lives in every Black-owned business that opens its doors in this neighborhood, including ours. We look at those founders as inspiration — people who built something meaningful in a world that wasn't always designed to include them. That's a story we know personally.
Why Black Entrepreneurs Were Ready for Legal Cannabis
Here's the truth that doesn't get said enough: Black communities have always understood cannabis. We lived through decades of criminalization that disproportionately targeted our neighborhoods, our families, and our people. We watched a plant get weaponized against us legally and socially, while the same plant was slowly normalized in predominantly white markets. So when legalization finally arrived in New York, Black entrepreneurs weren't starting from zero — we were starting from a deep, lived understanding of the culture, the product, and the community that had been waiting for this moment.
New York's Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act included social equity provisions specifically designed to prioritize people from communities most impacted by cannabis prohibition. That policy opened a door. But what filled that door was generations of hustle, community trust, and cultural fluency that no business school program can manufacture. Black founders in Harlem and across the five boroughs brought something to this industry that money alone can't buy: authenticity, roots, and real relationships with the people they're serving.
The Veteran and Family Dimension of Our Story
For us, this isn't just a business — it's a family operation built on values forged through military service and the kind of discipline that comes with it. Being Veteran-owned means we approach every aspect of this brand with accountability and intention. We don't cut corners on our products, our packaging, or our relationships with the dispensaries that carry us. From our Diamond Powder at 86.24% THC to our Bubble Hash at 53.32% THC, every single product we put out is independently lab-tested and small-batch crafted. That's not a marketing line. That's a standard we hold ourselves to because we believe our community deserves nothing less.
The Dispensary Landscape and Where Harlem Fits In
When we launched in March 2024, we set out to build real distribution across New York State's licensed adult-use market. Today, Silly Nice is available in over 150 licensed dispensaries across New York — from uptown Manhattan to Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Long Island, and beyond. That reach matters, but so does where we started. Having Harlem as our home base gave us credibility with communities that have historically been skeptical of new brands trying to come in and capitalize on culture they didn't grow up in. We are this culture. We didn't discover it.
The legal cannabis map in New York is still being drawn. New dispensaries continue to open, and the competition for shelf space is real. What we've found is that licensed shops — operators who are doing this the right way — want to carry brands that reflect the values of their own customers. Black-owned, community-rooted, quality-obsessed brands like ours aren't a niche. We're increasingly the standard that a growing number of consumers are seeking out, especially here in New York where people have always been sophisticated about what they support with their dollars.

Why Licensed Dispensaries Are the Right Move for Our Community
We want to be direct about something: buying from licensed, legal dispensaries isn't just about following rules — it's about protecting yourself and reinvesting in the community. Licensed shops carry products that have been lab-tested for safety, potency, and purity. Every Silly Nice product comes with verified lab results you can check yourself at sillynice.com/menu. When you buy from a licensed dispensary, you're supporting businesses that pay taxes, employ local workers, and operate with real accountability. That matters in Harlem and everywhere else in New York.
Our Products Are Built for Adults Who Know Quality
We didn't come to market with average products. We came with a curated lineup built for adults 21 and older who appreciate craft, transparency, and real potency. Our Diamond-Frosted and Live Resin Infused Flower comes in at 51.22% THC and retails for $60 for 3.5 grams — a premium experience for the flower lover who doesn't want to compromise. Our 2G All-In-One Vape in Alaskan Thunder Fuck hits at 82.46% THC and retails for $80, built for the person who wants a full-featured, high-performance vape without the fuss of charging a separate battery.
For concentrate enthusiasts, our Frosted Hash Ball at 67.34% THC and $50 per gram is a conversation-starter — visually striking, deeply aromatic, and a testament to how far small-batch hash craft has come. Our 510 Vape Cartridge in Pink Stardust at 81.96% THC for $40 is consistently one of our top movers because of the terpene profile and the smooth pull it delivers. We're proud of every item on this menu, and we back all of it with transparent lab data because that's what responsible, community-first cannabis looks like.

Small-Batch and Sustainable — On Purpose
We intentionally keep our production small-batch. This isn't a limitation — it's a choice. It means we can maintain quality control on every single run, ensure consistency across batches, and stay nimble enough to respond to what our community actually wants. Our sustainable packaging approach reflects the same mindset. We care about what we put out into the world, whether that's the cannabis itself or the materials it comes in. These are values we brought with us from Harlem, where resourcefulness and community responsibility have always gone hand in hand.
The Cultural Moment We're All Part of Right Now
We're living through something historic in New York cannabis. The window of time between legalization and full market maturity is narrow, and the brands, dispensaries, and entrepreneurs who establish themselves now are the ones who will shape this industry for the next decade. Harlem is at the center of that story — not just as a neighborhood where Black cannabis businesses happen to operate, but as a cultural anchor that signals to the rest of New York and the country what this industry can and should look like when it's built with equity at its core.
We feel a responsibility that goes beyond selling great products to adults 21 and older who want to relax and enjoy their time. We feel responsible to the young Black and Brown entrepreneurs coming up behind us who need to see that a family from Harlem can launch a brand in March 2024 and be sitting in over 150 dispensaries statewide within a year. That's not just our story — it's proof of what's possible when the door finally opens and the right people walk through it prepared.
What We Hope Other Black Entrepreneurs Take From This
If you're a Black entrepreneur watching the cannabis space and wondering whether there's room for you — there is. But the path requires real preparation: understand licensing requirements deeply, build relationships with licensed dispensary operators, invest in independent lab testing, and lead with community trust before you lead with marketing. The legal cannabis market in New York is demanding, but it rewards brands that are genuine, quality-focused, and community-connected. Those are advantages that can't be faked, and they're advantages that Black entrepreneurs from neighborhoods like Harlem often already have.
Harlem Made Us — And We're Just Getting Started
Everything we are as a brand flows from this neighborhood. The hustle, the culture, the pride, the standards, the community accountability — all of it comes from growing up and building here. When we talk about Harlem being a hub for Black cannabis entrepreneurship, we're not describing something that happened around us. We're describing something we're actively part of, actively contributing to, and actively proud of. Silly Nice is Harlem-born, and we carry that with us into every dispensary in New York State that stocks our products.
If you're 21 or older and you want to experience what it means when a cannabis brand is truly made with love, craft, and community — we invite you to find us. Check out our dispensary finder, browse our full menu with verified lab results, and come see what Harlem-built quality actually looks and feels like. This is more than cannabis. This is a movement rooted in a neighborhood that has been building something real for a very long time. We're grateful to be part of it, and we're grateful to have your support along the way.
