What Are THCa Diamonds and Why Does Extraction Matter?
THCa diamonds — also called THCa crystalline or diamond powder — are the purest, most potent form of cannabis concentrate available today. They are solid, crystalline structures of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa), the raw, non-psychoactive precursor to THC. When exposed to heat through dabbing or vaporizing, THCa converts to THC through decarboxylation — delivering an extraordinarily clean, high-potency experience. Our own Diamond Powder clocks in at 86.24% THC and 98.54% total cannabinoids in a single gram, available at licensed dispensaries across New York for $50. How you get from a cannabis plant to that kind of purity matters — and we're here to walk you through it.
At Silly Nice, we believe the people who consume our products deserve to understand exactly what they're putting in their bodies. We're a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, family-run brand based in Brooklyn, NYC — launched in March 2024 and now available in 150+ licensed New York adult-use dispensaries statewide. Transparency isn't a marketing strategy for us. It's the standard we were raised on and the standard Shane and LeVar have held for every product that carries the Silly Nice name. So let's get into the science — and the craft — behind THCa diamonds.
THCa vs. THC: Why the Distinction Matters
THCa is the acidic form of THC found naturally in fresh, uncured cannabis. It doesn't produce psychoactive effects on its own — that only happens when heat is applied (a process called decarboxylation). This distinction is critical to understanding why diamonds are so special: at extremely high THCa purity, like our Diamond Powder's 98.54% total cannabinoid content, you're dealing with a compound that is chemically precise, not approximated. The extraction process is what separates true crystalline THCa from looser, less refined concentrates.
The Starting Point: High-Quality Cannabis Input
No extraction method in the world can make a poor cannabis source into a premium product. The foundation of any high-quality THCa diamond is starting with exceptionally grown, trichome-rich cannabis flower or fresh-frozen material. Fresh-frozen cannabis — harvested and immediately frozen to preserve cannabinoid and terpene integrity — is the gold standard input for diamond extraction because it captures the plant at its biochemical peak before any degradation can occur. The resin glands, called trichomes, are where THCa, terpenes, and other cannabinoids live. Protecting them from the moment of harvest is step one.
This is why the quality of concentrate products tracks so closely with the care taken at cultivation. Growers who rush the dry-cure process, or who harvest before peak trichome development, produce starting material that will always yield a weaker, less refined extract — regardless of how sophisticated the downstream extraction equipment is. Small-batch, intentional cultivation matters enormously. Every gram of our Diamond Powder starts with input material that meets a very specific standard — and that rigor shows in the final lab numbers.
Why Fresh-Frozen Material Is Preferred for Diamonds
When cannabis is fresh-frozen immediately after harvest, it locks in volatile terpenes and prevents the enzymatic breakdown of cannabinoids. This gives extractors the highest possible concentration of THCa to work with before any processing begins. For diamond formation specifically, the higher the starting THCa concentration, the more efficient and complete the crystallization process will be downstream. Think of it like cooking — you need premium ingredients before technique can shine.
Solvent-Based Extraction: The Primary Method for THCa Diamonds
The most widely used method for producing THCa diamonds involves closed-loop hydrocarbon extraction — typically using butane, propane, or a blend of both, referred to as BHO (Butane Hash Oil). In a closed-loop system, the solvent is pressurized and passed through the cannabis material, stripping away cannabinoids, terpenes, and lipids from the plant matter. The resulting liquid solution is then carefully purged of residual solvent under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, leaving behind a concentrated, cannabinoid-rich oil.
What makes diamond formation possible within this process is the supersaturation of THCa in the resulting solution. When the solvent purge is conducted slowly — at lower temperatures over an extended period — THCa molecules begin to organize into crystalline structures. The more controlled and deliberate the purge, the larger and more defined the crystals become. This is not a fast process. Proper diamond formation requires patience, precision, and environmental control that most producers simply won't invest in. We do.
The Closed-Loop System: Safety and Purity Working Together
A properly engineered closed-loop system is not just the industry standard for hydrocarbon extraction — it's a safety and quality necessity. Because hydrocarbons like butane and propane are highly flammable, operating in a sealed, pressure-controlled environment protects both the extractor and the final product. It also allows for solvent recovery and recycling, reducing waste and ensuring that residual solvent levels in the final concentrate fall well within regulated limits. Independent lab testing — which we require for every Silly Nice product — verifies that residual solvents are either undetectable or below threshold. The Diamond Mining Process: Separation and Crystallization
After the initial extraction, producers use a technique called 'diamond mining' to facilitate THCa crystal formation. The extracted oil — still containing both cannabinoids and terpenes in a liquid state — is sealed in pressure-rated vessels and held at specific temperature ranges, typically between 70°F and 80°F, for anywhere from 48 hours to several weeks. During this time, THCa molecules gradually nucleate and grow into crystals, while the residual terpene-rich liquid (called 'sauce' or 'terp sauce') separates naturally to the top.
The separation of diamonds from sauce is where individual producers make choices that define their final product. Some products are sold as 'diamonds and sauce' — keeping the crystals and the terpene-rich liquid together for a full-spectrum experience. Others, like our Diamond Powder, take those THCa crystals through additional refinement steps to reach the near-total purity reflected in our 98.54% total cannabinoid content. The process requires careful monitoring and adjustment — ambient temperature swings, pressure differentials, and contamination can all disrupt crystallization.
Post-Crystallization Refinement: Getting to 98%+
Once crystals have fully formed, they are separated from the remaining sauce using filtration — typically through vacuum filtration setups. The isolated crystals are then washed with a small amount of clean solvent to remove any remaining lipids, waxes, or residual sauce clinging to the surface. This wash step is what takes already-impressive THCa crystals and pushes them into ultra-refined territory. Multiple wash-and-filter cycles, combined with a final low-temperature purge, produce the kind of purity we're proud to put our name on. At 86.24% THC and 98.54% total cannabinoids per gram, our Diamond Powder doesn't leave room for compromise.
Alternative Method: The Cold Cure and Mechanical Separation
There is a growing category of solventless or reduced-solvent diamond production that deserves mention, particularly as our community in New York increasingly asks about what goes into their cannabis. Mechanical separation methods — like the ice-water extraction we use for our Bubble Hash — do not produce THCa diamonds in the same form as hydrocarbon extraction. However, they are part of the same philosophy: using cold temperatures and physical agitation to isolate and concentrate the most potent parts of the cannabis plant without chemical solvents.
Our Bubble Hash at $44 per gram — with 53.32% THC, 62.86% total cannabinoids, and 6.2% terpene content — is a living example of what solventless extraction at the highest level can produce. The 6.2% terpene content matters enormously; terpenes are the aromatic compounds responsible for the distinct effects and flavors cannabis produces, and a high terpene percentage signals a full-spectrum, minimally processed product. Bubble Hash and Diamond Powder represent two very different extraction philosophies — both of which we execute at the highest level we know how.

Bubble Hash
Our Frosted Hash Ball at $50 per gram — 67.34% THC, 78.34% total cannabinoids, 5.7% terpenes — is handmade and artisanal, shaped and cured with an approach that prioritizes terpene preservation alongside potency. Diamond Powder is the opposite end of that spectrum: it sacrifices the terpene-rich complexity of full-spectrum hash for near-absolute cannabinoid purity. Neither is better in an absolute sense. They're tools in the toolkit of an educated adult consumer — and knowing the difference is exactly the kind of knowledge we want our community to carry into every dispensary visit.

How Silly Nice Uses THCa Diamonds Beyond Diamond Powder
THCa diamonds aren't just a standalone product in our lineup — they're an ingredient. Our Infused Flower (Papaya Wine) at $60 for 3.5g is coated in live resin and THCa diamonds, pushing the total potency to 51.22% THC and 58.63% total cannabinoids in a form factor that still feels like traditional flower. For adults 21+ who want the ritual of rolling and smoking but demand elevated potency, infused flower is one of the most accessible entry points to diamond-level cannabis without needing a dab rig or specialized equipment.
This kind of product layering — taking a pure extract and integrating it back into flower — requires precise application techniques to ensure even distribution without damaging the underlying material. When diamonds are applied inconsistently or at the wrong temperature, they can clump or fall off, compromising the product experience. When done right, as with Papaya Wine, the result is flower that burns clean, tastes full, and hits at a level well above standard infused products on the market. Every batch we release is independently lab-tested, and those COAs are always available at sillynice.com/menu.
Why We Keep Everything Small-Batch
Scaling diamond production is easy — maintaining quality at scale is not. The crystallization process is sensitive to environmental variables in ways that mass production struggles to control. We made a deliberate decision when we launched Silly Nice in March 2024: we would rather have product that meets our standard in 150+ dispensaries than product that fills every shelf in New York but cuts corners on purity or process. Shane's background as a U.S. Army Veteran shaped how we approach operational discipline. You build the process right the first time, and you don't deviate from the standard because it's inconvenient.
The Bottom Line: Purity Is Earned, Not Marketed
THCa diamond extraction is a multi-step, precision-driven process — from the quality of the input flower, through closed-loop hydrocarbon extraction, through controlled crystallization, through post-harvest refinement and washing, to final lab verification. There are no shortcuts that produce a product at 98.54% total cannabinoids. That number is the result of process integrity at every single stage. When you see it on our label, it's not a marketing number — it's a Certificate of Analysis you can look up yourself at sillynice.com/menu.
