These Conversations Are Personal to Us
We built Silly Nice from the ground up — a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, family-run cannabis brand born right here in Harlem, New York. And when we say family-run, we mean it in every sense of the word. That means we've had these conversations ourselves. Around the dinner table. On the phone with aunties who remember a very different era. With parents who sacrificed everything and don't quite understand why cannabis is suddenly on shelves with neat packaging and lab reports attached to it.
Since we launched in March 2024, we've grown into over 150 licensed adult-use dispensaries across New York State. And with that growth comes responsibility — not just to provide the cleanest, most carefully crafted small-batch products we can, but to help our community navigate what legalization actually means in real life. One of the most underrated parts of that? Learning how to have honest, respectful conversations with the people we love most about cannabis.
Why This Matters More Than People Think
For a lot of families in New York — especially Black families, Caribbean families, immigrant families — cannabis carries decades of complicated history. The war on drugs devastated our neighborhoods. People we knew lost years of their lives over something that is now sold legally two blocks away. That tension is real, and it doesn't disappear just because a law changed. When we talk to our community, we lead with that acknowledgment. You can't skip past the history and expect understanding on the other side.
Start With Listening, Not Defending
The instinct when a family member pushes back on cannabis is to defend yourself — to launch into facts, THC percentages, lab results. We get it. We sell products like our Diamond Powder at 86.24% THC and our Frosted Hash Ball at 67.34% THC, and we can talk all day about transparency and independent lab testing. But none of that lands if the person across from you doesn't feel heard first.
Ask your family member what they actually know about cannabis — not to challenge them, but to genuinely understand where their concern is coming from. Is it a health worry? A moral one? A fear rooted in watching the community get locked up for possession? Each of those deserves a different kind of conversation, and none of them deserves dismissal. When you listen first, you earn the right to be heard.
The Stigma Is Generational — Handle It With Care
For older generations, especially those who lived through the eighties and nineties in New York City, cannabis stigma was survival-coded. It wasn't just about the plant — it was about what association with it could cost you. A job. A home. Your freedom. Acknowledging that history out loud — saying "I understand why this felt dangerous for so long" — does more to open a conversation than any statistic. Empathy is the entry point. Always.
Explain What Legal Actually Means in New York
A lot of people in our community are still operating under old assumptions. Many don't realize that adults 21 and older in New York State can now legally purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries, possess it, and consume it in permitted spaces. That's not a loophole — it's the law. And legal means accountability. Licensed dispensaries are regulated. Products are independently tested. When someone walks into one of the 150+ dispensaries carrying our products and picks up a 1g Bubble Hash for $44, they're buying something with a verified 53.32% THC concentration that has been through rigorous testing.
This is a good time to explain the difference between the old illegal market and today's licensed adult-use market. In the past, there was no way to know what was in what you were buying. Today, every Silly Nice product comes with lab-verified results, sustainably sourced materials, and clear labeling. You can look up exactly what's in every product we make right at sillynice.com/menu. That kind of transparency didn't exist before — and it matters for the conversation you're trying to have.

Dispel the Myths Without Being Preachy
Some of the most persistent myths about cannabis are that everyone who uses it is irresponsible, that it's a gateway to harder substances, or that it has no place in a serious, productive adult life. You don't need to deliver a TED Talk to push back on these. Share your own experience calmly. Talk about how legal access has changed things — how adults may choose cannabis the same way others choose to unwind after a long week. The key word is adults. Cannabis is for adults 21 and older, period. That boundary matters, and saying it clearly shows your family you take the responsibility seriously.
Use Real Examples — Including Ours
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is: the people behind this are just like us. We are a Black-owned, Veteran-owned small business. We launched in Harlem. We are people who have seen what this city does to communities like ours, and we made a choice to build something legal, clean, and community-first. When family members realize that the industry is not just corporate newcomers cashing in, but actual people from neighborhoods like theirs building legitimate businesses, it shifts the frame.
Point to specific products if it helps ground the conversation. Our 2G All-In-One Vape in Alaskan Thunder Fuck at 82.46% THC is not some mysterious back-pocket product — it's a precisely crafted, lab-tested item sitting on a licensed dispensary shelf. Our 510 Vape Cartridge in Pink Stardust at 81.96% THC comes in sustainable packaging with full transparency behind it. These are not the products your family member was warned about decades ago. Context changes everything.
Bring In the Community Angle
One thing that resonates deeply — especially in New York — is the economic justice piece of cannabis legalization. The state's adult-use framework was built with social equity provisions specifically because communities of color were disproportionately harmed by prohibition. When you buy from a Black-owned, licensed brand like us, you're not just buying a product — you're participating in a system that's trying to redirect some of that economic opportunity back to the communities that paid the heaviest price. That's a story worth telling at the dinner table.
Know When to Pause the Conversation
Not every conversation ends in agreement, and that's okay. Sometimes the most respectful thing you can do is say, "I hear you, and I'm not going to push this tonight." Forcing a resolution on a topic tied to decades of fear, trauma, and deeply held values rarely works. What does work is consistency — showing up as yourself, making responsible choices, and letting your actions over time do more talking than any single conversation ever could.
If a family member is genuinely curious about the medical or wellness side of cannabis, we'd encourage you to direct them toward credible resources rather than making claims yourself. We never suggest that cannabis treats, cures, or prevents any health condition — and neither should you on our behalf. What we can say is that many adults choose cannabis as part of a personal wellness routine, and that's their right to explore with proper information and a doctor's guidance if needed.
Set Boundaries That Show Maturity
Part of being a responsible adult cannabis consumer means modeling the behavior that changes minds. Never consume around minors. Never drive under the influence — full stop. Respect spaces where cannabis isn't welcome. Keep your products stored safely. When your family sees you operate with that level of intentionality, it's harder to hold on to the idea that legal cannabis use looks like the stereotype they've been conditioned to fear. You become the counter-narrative.

These Conversations Are How Culture Shifts
We didn't build Silly Nice in a vacuum. We built it because we believe that when Black-owned, community-rooted businesses lead in this industry, it changes the story for everyone. But that story doesn't just get told in dispensaries — it gets told at kitchen tables, at cookouts, in phone calls home, and in the quiet moments when someone you love finally says, "Okay, I'm starting to understand this differently."
Legalization in New York is more than a policy change. For our community, it's a chance to reclaim something that was weaponized against us. When we have honest, caring conversations with our families about what that actually means — what legal, tested, small-batch cannabis looks like today — we are doing the real work of normalization. Not with arrogance. Not with lectures. But with the same love and patience it takes to build anything worth building.
We're proud to be part of that shift, and we're proud to serve the New York community from our home in Harlem. If you want to see what responsible, transparent cannabis looks like in product form, explore our full menu at sillynice.com/menu. All THC percentages, all pricing, all lab results — right there, nothing hidden. Because that's who we are. And that's the story worth bringing home.
