What ID Do You Need as a Visitor from Eswatini?

Your Eswatini passport is a perfectly valid form of identification at any licensed New York dispensary. You do not need a New York State driver's license, a U.S. ID, or any other special documentation. As long as your passport confirms you are 21 or older, you are eligible to purchase.

How Much Cannabis Can You Buy at One Time?

New York State law sets per-transaction purchase limits for adult-use consumers. You can purchase up to three ounces of cannabis flower per transaction, and up to 24 grams of cannabis concentrate per transaction. These limits apply to each individual purchase at a dispensary. As a visitor, you should purchase only what you realistically intend to consume during your stay in New York. Do not purchase more than you can responsibly use during your trip.

Knowing where you can consume is just as important as knowing where to buy. New York law permits adults 21 and over to consume cannabis in private spaces. If you are staying with a friend or host who permits cannabis use on their private property, that is generally an appropriate consumption environment. Consumption is NOT permitted in the following locations: hotel rooms (most hotels explicitly prohibit cannabis use on their premises and may charge significant cleaning fees or remove you from the property), public streets and sidewalks, parks designated as smoke-free, vehicles of any kind, public transit, or any space where tobacco smoking is prohibited. Do not consume cannabis while walking down the street in New York City, even though you may see others doing so — you risk a fine and an unpleasant experience with law enforcement.

We also want to be absolutely direct: never operate a vehicle, bicycle, or any motorized transport after consuming cannabis. Plan your consumption for times when you are settled and do not need to travel. Use rideshare services, subways, or taxis if you need to move around the city after consuming. This Is Not a Risk Worth Taking — Ever

We want to be completely unambiguous about this: do not attempt to transport cannabis purchased in New York back to Eswatini or across any international border. Cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance under United States federal law, which governs all federal airports and international points of departure. TSA agents are federal employees operating under federal law, and any cannabis discovered at a U.S. airport security checkpoint — regardless of New York State's legal market — can result in federal charges.

On the other side of that flight, Eswatini's laws prohibit cannabis importation and possession. Travelers caught transporting cannabis into Eswatini face serious criminal penalties under Swazi law.
