Before you walk into any dispensary, it helps to know the rules. New York State legalized adult-use cannabis in 2021, and licensed dispensaries began serving customers across the state shortly after. As a visitor, you have the exact same legal rights as a New York resident — as long as you are 21 years of age or older, you can legally purchase cannabis products from any licensed adult-use dispensary in the state.

What's Legal and What's Not

Adults 21 and over may purchase cannabis from licensed retailers, possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis flower or 24 grams of concentrated cannabis in public. You may also consume cannabis in designated consumption lounges and in private spaces where smoking is permitted. Public consumption — including sidewalks, parks, and near schools — is technically restricted, so always be mindful of where you are. Most importantly, never operate a vehicle or any form of transportation after consuming cannabis. Stick to walking, rideshares, or public transit when you're out enjoying the city.
