Understanding NYC Cannabis Laws as a Visitor
New York State legalized adult-use cannabis in 2021, and since then, licensed dispensaries have opened across all five boroughs and throughout the state. As a visitor from Palau, here's what you need to know before you walk into a shop. Cannabis is legal for adults 21 years of age and older. You do not need to be a New York resident to purchase — your valid passport or government-issued ID from Palau will work just fine at any licensed dispensary. You will be carded at the door, so always have your ID ready.
All legal cannabis purchases must be made at licensed adult-use dispensaries. Street vendors and unlicensed shops are illegal, unregulated, and their products are not lab-tested for safety. Always look for the official NYS licensed dispensary signage. Additionally, public smoking of cannabis is prohibited in New York City in places where tobacco smoking is also not allowed, including parks, sidewalks near building entrances, and public transportation. Some licensed consumption lounges do exist where you can legally enjoy cannabis on-site — ask your dispensary for recommendations.
