New York State legalized adult-use cannabis in 2021, and licensed dispensaries have been steadily opening across the five boroughs and beyond. If you are 21 years of age or older, you can legally purchase cannabis from any state-licensed adult-use dispensary in New York. There is no residency requirement — your passport is valid ID, and visitors from other countries are absolutely welcome to shop.

What's Legal and What's Not

Here's what you need to know before you walk into a dispensary. Adults 21 and older may purchase and possess up to three ounces of cannabis flower or 24 grams of concentrated cannabis products. Licensed dispensaries are the only legal place to buy — street sales are not regulated, not tested, and not something we'd ever recommend. Public consumption is technically permitted in some outdoor areas where tobacco smoking is allowed, but many places — including parks, transit, and most indoor spaces — prohibit it. Consumption lounges are beginning to emerge in NYC as well, offering a legal, social space to enjoy what you purchase. Always be mindful of your surroundings, and please never consume before getting behind the wheel of any vehicle.

What to Bring to a Dispensary

Bring your passport — it's the most straightforward form of international ID, and every licensed dispensary in New York will accept it. Some dispensaries are cash-only or prefer cash, so it's smart to carry some with you. Others accept debit cards or use cashless ATM kiosks on-site.
