New York State legalized adult-use cannabis in 2021, and since then, licensed dispensaries have opened across the five boroughs and beyond. Here is what you need to know as a visitor from Poland before you walk through any dispensary door.

The Legal Age Is 21+

Cannabis is legal for adults who are 21 years of age or older. No exceptions. Every licensed dispensary will ask for a valid government-issued photo ID at the door. As a Polish visitor, your passport is your best friend here — it is universally accepted at every dispensary in New York. Some dispensaries may also accept a valid Polish national ID card or international driver's license, but we strongly recommend carrying your passport to avoid any complications.

Licensed Dispensaries Only — No Street Purchases

In New York City, you may occasionally see unlicensed street vendors or smoke shops claiming to sell cannabis. These are illegal operations, and purchasing from them puts you at legal risk and exposes you to untested, potentially unsafe products. Always purchase from a licensed adult-use dispensary. Licensed shops display their New York State OCM license prominently. Where You Can and Cannot Consume

Public smoking of cannabis is prohibited in most areas where tobacco smoking is also banned — this includes parks, sidewalks in many districts, subway stations, and building entrances. New York City does have licensed cannabis consumption lounges where adults can consume legally on-site. If you plan to enjoy cannabis during your stay, look for a licensed consumption lounge near your hotel, or consume privately in a space where smoking is permitted. Never consume in your hotel room without first confirming it is allowed, and never consume while operating any vehicle or transportation.

Every dispensary will check your ID before letting you in. As a Polish visitor, your passport is the most reliable document to bring. Keep it on you every time you plan to visit a dispensary. You will check in at a reception desk, show your ID, and then be welcomed into the shop floor.

Cash and Card — Know What to Expect
