From all of us at Silly Nice, welcome to New York City. We're Shane Breen and LeVar Thomas — two partners of 25 years, Brooklyn-born and bred, and the founders of Silly Nice Cannabis. Shane served in the U.S. Army, and together we built this brand from the ground up as a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, family-run cannabis company. In Slovakia, cannabis remains illegal for both recreational and medical use. Possession of even small amounts can result in criminal penalties under Slovak law. Practical Tips for Slovak Visitors Buying Cannabis in NYC
We want your experience to be smooth from the moment you walk into a dispensary to the moment you enjoy your purchase. Here's what we recommend based on what we know visitors often encounter for the first time.
Bring Your Passport — Always
Your Slovak passport is a valid, accepted form of identification at all licensed New York dispensaries. Budtenders are required by law to check ID for every customer, every time — no exceptions, no matter how old you look. Carry your passport with you. Do not leave it at the hotel when you plan to visit a dispensary. Some shops may also accept a Slovak national ID card or EU driver's license, but a passport is the most universally accepted document, so lead with that.
Cash Is King, But Cards Are Welcome Too
Most licensed dispensaries in New York City accept both cash and card payments. However, because cannabis remains federally illegal in the United States, some banking complications exist for dispensaries, and a handful of shops operate on a cash-only or cash-preferred basis. We always recommend having some U.S. dollars on hand before visiting a dispensary. ATMs are widely available throughout New York City. Check with your bank about international withdrawal fees before you travel so there are no surprises.
Where You Can — and Cannot — Consume
New York law allows adults to consume cannabis in private spaces — this typically means inside a private residence. You cannot smoke or vaporize cannabis in public spaces such as sidewalks, parks, subway stations, hotel lobbies, or restaurants. Many hotels also prohibit cannabis consumption under their own house policies. If you're staying at a hotel, review their smoking policy carefully. Some cannabis-friendly accommodations in New York City do exist, so it's worth researching in advance.
