We say this not to lecture you, but to make sure you have the full picture: what is legal in New York City does not change what the laws are back home. Also critically important: you cannot transport cannabis across international borders. Bring Your Passport — It's Your Golden Ticket

Every licensed dispensary in New York is required by law to verify your age before allowing you to purchase anything. As an international visitor, your passport is your most important document. Carry it with you when you plan to visit a dispensary. Budtenders — the knowledgeable staff inside dispensaries — will check your ID at the door or at the register, and a valid international passport is universally accepted. Do not forget it at your hotel.

Cash Is Always Welcome

Because cannabis remains federally illegal in the United States, many dispensaries operate primarily on a cash basis. While some dispensaries have adopted debit card payment options or in-store ATMs, we always recommend bringing cash to ensure a smooth, seamless transaction. No Public Consumption — Know the Rules

New York law permits adults to consume cannabis in private spaces, but public consumption — on sidewalks, in parks, in restaurants, in hotel lobbies, in vehicles, or anywhere that smoking is otherwise prohibited — is not allowed and can result in a fine. If you purchase cannabis, plan to enjoy it in a private setting such as a private residence or a designated cannabis consumption lounge if you have access to one. And of course, never drive or operate any vehicle after consuming cannabis. Always plan your transportation in advance — NYC's subway and rideshare options are plentiful.
