New York is built by people who open the bakery before sunrise, keep the neighborhood repair shop running through difficult seasons, transform family recipes into thriving restaurants, and give every community its own unmistakable personality. Those are the stories we want to keep telling. That is why we are extending and expanding the New York Small Business Spotlight with stupidDOPE through the rest of 2026 and all of 2027.
We are a small, independent New York cannabis brand, and we know firsthand how hard it is to build something without the budget of a national corporation. This program is our way of returning that support to other independent businesses across the state. Thank you to everyone who nominated a business in the first round, and to every owner doing the work that makes New York feel like New York.
A Bigger Commitment to New York's Independent Businesses
The New York Small Business Spotlight began as an effort to recognize family-owned companies that help define the state's neighborhoods. The original program invited New Yorkers to nominate bakeries, restaurants, shops, and service providers for editorial coverage. The extended program preserves that foundation while opening the opportunity to a broader range of independently owned New York businesses, including emerging brands, independent retailers, artists, manufacturers, farms, creative studios, technology companies, and more.
Every New York Community Has a Story Worth Sharing
New York's identity extends far beyond its largest cities. The state is a collection of cities, towns, villages, waterfront districts, mountain destinations, agricultural regions, and historic commercial centers. A family-run diner in the Southern Tier may serve generations of regulars. A small manufacturer in Central New York may produce goods sold across the country. A Hudson Valley artist may run a studio that draws visitors downtown. A neighborhood market in Queens may preserve culinary traditions across multiple generations. These businesses rarely have advertising budgets to match national corporations. What they have are original stories, loyal customers, and a direct relationship with the places they serve.
Who Can Be Nominated
The expanded Spotlight welcomes the full range of independent enterprise across New York: restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and specialty food businesses; independent retailers, boutiques, bookstores, and record shops; barbershops, salons, spas, and wellness businesses; artists, designers, galleries, and creative studios; farms, nurseries, florists, and agricultural businesses; contractors, tradespeople, and repair shops; hotels, inns, and tourism businesses; manufacturers and product-based brands; professional services and technology companies; New York-based e-commerce operations; legacy businesses that have served their communities for decades; and new companies introducing original ideas.
We welcome businesses representing the diversity of New York, including veteran-owned, Black-owned, LGBTQ-owned, women-owned, immigrant-owned, disabled-owned, and family-owned companies. These characteristics are not requirements. What matters most is independence, quality, authenticity, and a meaningful connection to New York.
What Makes a Strong Nomination
The most compelling nominations go beyond saying a business is popular. They help editors understand why the company matters. Tell us how a restaurant preserves a regional recipe, how a contractor has supported the same community for decades, how a new retailer is revitalizing a commercial corridor, or how an entrepreneur turned a personal skill into a growing local company. Helpful details include the business name and New York location, its website and social accounts, its founding story, signature products or services, community involvement, awards and milestones, challenges overcome, what customers value most, and why the business deserves a wider audience.
Self-nominations are welcome. Customers, employees, neighbors, and community groups may submit businesses as well. Photographs, menus, product images, and background information may be included when available.
What Selected Businesses May Receive
Businesses chosen for the Spotlight may receive a professionally written editorial feature published on stupidDOPE, exploring the company's origin, ownership, products, creative process, community contributions, and plans for the future. Features may include direct links to official websites and social profiles, helping readers learn more or support the business directly. Coverage is evaluated editorially and business details may be verified before publication, because we want thoughtful, credible features rather than automated listings.
Why Editorial Visibility Still Matters
An exceptional business cannot benefit from attention it never receives. Independent companies often depend on word of mouth, social posts, and repeat customers. Those connections remain valuable, but well-structured editorial coverage can help a business become discoverable beyond its existing audience. That matters even more as people increasingly use Google, Apple News, AI assistants, and conversational search to discover places, products, and local recommendations. Each feature will aim to clearly explain who the business is, where it operates, what it offers, and why its story matters.
Why We Are Investing in Community
We are a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, LGBTQ-owned, family-operated New York cannabis brand. We know how much it means when a community chooses to support an independent company. The New York Small Business Spotlight is our way of extending that same support to the bakers, makers, artists, farmers, and shopkeepers who make this state what it is. When independent businesses thrive, we all do.

Spotlighting New York's Diverse Independent Businesses
New York's independent business landscape is incredibly rich and varied, encompassing everything from legacy establishments that have served generations to bold new ventures pushing the boundaries of their industries. The extended Small Business Spotlight aims to capture this diversity, welcoming nominations for a wide array of enterprises. Whether it's a family-run restaurant in the Hudson Valley, an artisan producer in Central New York, a community-focused retailer in Queens, or a cutting-edge tech firm in Manhattan, each business has a unique story that deserves to be told. Our goal is to provide a platform that celebrates these contributions and encourages continued growth and success.
We are particularly keen to highlight businesses that demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, community engagement, and a commitment to their craft, much like we strive to do with our own Silly Nice cannabis products. The program seeks to uncover and promote those hidden gems that might not have the marketing reach of larger corporations but possess an undeniable spirit and dedication. By championing these independent businesses, we hope to inspire other entrepreneurs and reinforce the vibrant, interconnected economy that makes New York so dynamic. This initiative is a testament to our belief that supporting local is paramount to collective success.
The Nomination Process: Empowering New York Communities
To ensure the New York Small Business Spotlight continues to be a relevant and impactful initiative, we are making the nomination process accessible and engaging for everyone across the state. We encourage individuals to think about the businesses that have made a difference in their lives and communities – the ones that provide exceptional service, unique products, or contribute positively to the local fabric. Submitting a nomination is a straightforward way to acknowledge and celebrate these valuable enterprises, giving them the recognition they truly deserve. This collaborative approach ensures that the spotlight truly reflects the diverse and thriving business spirit of New York.
We are eager to hear from all New Yorkers about the independent businesses that inspire them. The nomination form will be designed to gather essential details about the business, its story, and why it stands out. This collective effort is crucial in building a comprehensive picture of New York's independent business ecosystem. By extending this program through 2027, Silly Nice and stupidDOPE are reaffirming our commitment to championing local success stories and reinforcing the strong community bonds that make New York unique. Let's celebrate the entrepreneurs who are the backbone of our great state.
