§ 13 — VA APPOINTMENT GUIDE

CANNABIS & YOUR VA APPOINTMENT.

A step-by-step guide to preparing for, navigating, and following up on a VA appointment that includes an honest conversation about cannabis. Ten steps. Three phases. One goal: better care.

PHASE 01 — PREPARE

STEP 01

Write down your cannabis use honestly

List what you use (flower, edibles, concentrates), how often, and why. Your VA doctor needs the full picture to manage your care safely. You will not lose benefits for being honest.

STEP 02

Generate your personalized question list

Use our Doctor Questions tool to create a printed list based on your conditions, medications, and state. Bring it with you.

STEP 03

List all medications and supplements

Cannabis can interact with SSRIs, blood thinners, sleep medications, and other common veteran prescriptions. Write everything down so your provider can check for interactions.

STEP 04

Know your state law

Review your state cannabis page so you can ask informed questions about legal protections, medical program eligibility, and possession limits.

PHASE 02 — IN THE ROOM

STEP 05

Be direct — start the conversation yourself

VA providers may not ask about cannabis unprompted. Say: "I want to talk about my cannabis use and how it fits with my treatment plan." This sets a clinical, not punitive, tone.

STEP 06

Ask about drug interactions

Ask specifically: "How might cannabis interact with my current medications?" Use your interaction checker results if you have them.

STEP 07

Ask what the evidence says about your condition

Bring your condition guide. Ask: "What does the research say about cannabis and [PTSD / chronic pain / sleep]?" Your provider may not know the latest research — sharing it helps.

STEP 08

Ask about monitoring

Ask: "If I continue using cannabis, how will we monitor my condition?" and "What signs should I watch for that cannabis is helping or hurting?"

PHASE 03 — FOLLOW UP

STEP 09

Document what was discussed

Write down what your provider said, any recommendations, and next steps. This helps you track your care over time and remember what was agreed.

STEP 10

Follow up on referrals

If your provider referred you to a specialist (mental health, pain management, substance use), follow up. If you want to reduce or stop cannabis use, ask about VA support programs.

REMEMBER

You will not lose your VA benefits for using cannabis. VA providers cannot recommend cannabis, but they can and should discuss it with you clinically. Be honest — your provider needs the full picture to keep you safe.
