Quick Answer
Silly Nice explores how cannabis has woven itself into Brooklyn's cultural revival — from Bed-Stuy to Bushwick — and what it means for our community today.
Brooklyn Has Always Been a Blueprint
Brooklyn's cultural renaissance — the one people write think pieces about, the one that turned Bed-Stuy brownstones into global design references and made Bushwick warehouse walls into internationally photographed canvases — didn't happen by accident. It happened because Black and Brown New Yorkers, artists, veterans, immigrants, and working-class people refused to let this borough be anything less than extraordinary. Cannabis has been part of that story for decades, passed quietly in parks, studios, and stoops. What's different now is that we've brought it into the light.
We are Silly Nice. We launched in March 2024 as a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, family-run cannabis brand based in Brooklyn, NYC. Our co-founders — Shane Breen, a U.S. Army Veteran, and LeVar Thomas — have been building together for over 25 years. When New York's adult-use cannabis market finally opened its doors, we didn't just walk through — we ran. And we ran toward the people who built this city, the people who deserve to experience premium cannabis done right. This is our retrospective on how Brooklyn's culture and cannabis have grown up side by side.
The Underground Years: Culture Born in the Shadows
What the Stoop Knew Before the Dispensary Did
Long before licensed dispensaries existed in New York, cannabis was already deeply embedded in Brooklyn's creative DNA. It lived in the recording booths of Fort Greene, in the late-night cypher sessions in Crown Heights, in the painting studios of Williamsburg before the rent tripled. It was community currency — a shared exhale between neighbors who understood each other without explanation. The culture didn't wait for legalization to assign cannabis meaning. The meaning was already there, passed down through generations of people who used it to unwind, to create, to connect.
What's painful — and important to say out loud — is that those same communities were also the most targeted by enforcement. Black neighborhoods in Brooklyn bore an outsized share of cannabis-related arrests even as the wider culture celebrated and commercialized the plant. The war on drugs wasn't a policy abstraction here; it was a lived reality on specific streets, in specific zip codes. The modern cannabis renaissance in Brooklyn cannot be told honestly without holding that history alongside the celebration.
New York's Legal Market and the Promise of Equity
Why Adult-Use Legalization Changed the Stakes for Everyone
When New York State moved toward adult-use cannabis, it did something most states hadn't — it tried to write equity into the foundation. The MRTA prioritized licenses for communities most impacted by the drug war. It created pathways for people who had been pushed out to come back in through the front door. That framework isn't perfect, and the rollout has had its turbulence, but the intention mattered. And for brands like ours — Black-owned, Veteran-owned, built from the ground up — that intention created a real opening.
Today, Silly Nice is carried in 150+ licensed adult-use dispensaries across New York State. That's not a small thing. That's the result of deliberate craftsmanship, genuine community relationships, and a refusal to cut corners on quality. Every product we make is independently lab-tested. Every batch is small. Every decision is made with the intention of giving adult consumers 21 and older something they can actually trust. You can verify every lab result at sillynice.com/menu — we believe transparency is part of respect.

Craft Cannabis as Cultural Expression
Why Small-Batch Is a Love Language in Brooklyn
Brooklyn has always celebrated the handmade, the intentional, the small-batch. From the natural wine bars of Carroll Gardens to the handcrafted leather studios of Red Hook, this borough has a nose for authenticity. That's exactly the ethos we bring to cannabis. Our Frosted Hash Ball — 1g at $50, handmade, with 67.34% THC, 78.34% total cannabinoids, and 5.7% terpene content — is the kind of product that takes genuine skill and patience to produce. It's not manufactured at scale. It's made the way artists make things: with intention, with care, and with a standard that doesn't compromise.
Our Bubble Hash follows the same philosophy. At $44 for 1g, it's solventless, made using only ice and water, and carries 53.32% THC, 62.86% total cannabinoids, and 6.2% terpene content. That terpene number matters — terpenes are the aromatic compounds that shape how cannabis feels and tastes, and 6.2% is a figure that reflects real quality sourcing, not shortcuts. When Brooklyn culture says it values authenticity, we answer with numbers you can verify and flavors you can feel.
Vaping With Intention: Technology Meets Craft
Not every New Yorker has time for an elaborate ritual. Some of us are moving fast — between shifts, between boroughs, between obligations. That's why our 510 Vape in Pink Stardust ($40, 1g, 81.96% THC, 88.36% total cannabinoids) and our 2G All-In-One in Alaskan Thunder Fuck ($80, 2g, 82.46% THC, 84.06% total cannabinoids, rechargeable USB-C) exist. These are cannabis-derived terpene products built for adults who want clean, consistent, premium vapor without compromise. The AIO in particular is built for the long haul — rechargeable, discreet, and potent enough to remind you we never cut corners.
The Brooklyn Neighborhoods That Set the Tone
From Flatbush to Greenpoint: Culture in Every Corner
Brooklyn isn't one neighborhood. It's fifty neighborhoods with fifty different rhythms, and each one has contributed something irreplaceable to the larger cultural identity of New York City. Flatbush gave us the energy of the diaspora — Caribbean, Haitian, Jamaican roots running deep through every block. Park Slope gave the borough its literary pulse. East New York and Brownsville gave it resilience. Greenpoint gave it grit and working-class solidarity. Dumbo gave it ambition and reinvention. Cannabis culture, at its best, reflects all of that — it's communal, it crosses boundaries, and it doesn't belong to any single demographic or aesthetic.
When we think about where Silly Nice fits into Brooklyn's ongoing story, we think about all of those neighborhoods simultaneously. We're not a luxury brand that only speaks to one kind of consumer. We're a premium brand that believes quality cannabis — rigorously tested, carefully made, fairly priced — is something every adult in this borough deserves access to. Our $44 Bubble Hash and our $80 AIO exist in the same menu because our community is diverse, and so are its preferences. That breadth is intentional.

Black Ownership, Veteran Service, and What It Actually Means
Accountability to Community, Not Just Commerce
When we say Silly Nice is Black-owned and Veteran-owned, we're not putting on badges for optics. Shane Breen served this country in the U.S. Army. That service — the discipline, the sense of mission, the commitment to something larger than oneself — is embedded in how we operate. LeVar Thomas and Shane have been partners in business and in life for over 25 years. That kind of longevity doesn't happen without trust, alignment, and a shared set of values. We built this brand from that foundation.
Black ownership in the cannabis industry is still the exception, not the rule — even in a market that promised equity. We take that reality seriously. Every dollar that flows through a licensed dispensary to a Black-owned brand like ours is a small correction to a very large historical wrong. We're not naive enough to think commerce alone heals anything. But we do believe that economic participation, done with integrity, is part of the longer work. And we believe Brooklyn understands that better than most places on earth.
LGBTQ+ Ownership and the Full Spectrum of Who We Are
We are also proudly LGBTQ+-owned. Brooklyn has long been a place where queer identity, Black identity, and creative identity intersect and thrive. We carry all of those identities without apology and with enormous pride. Our community includes everyone who shows up with authenticity — regardless of who they love, how they identify, or where they come from. The cannabis we make is for that full, beautiful, complicated range of people. New York has never been a city for the narrow-minded, and neither are we.

Diamond-Frosted & Live Resin Infused Flower
Our Diamond Powder — 1g of ultra-refined THCa crystalline at $50, with 86.24% THC and 98.54% total cannabinoids — represents one end of the potency spectrum. This is for the experienced adult consumer who knows exactly what they want and expects the numbers to be real. Every batch is independently lab-tested. Every Certificate of Analysis is available at sillynice.com/menu. There is no guessing with Silly Nice. What we say is on the label is what's in the product — full stop. Our Infused Flower in Papaya Wine — 3.5g at $60, with 51.22% THC, 58.63% total cannabinoids, and infused with live resin plus THCa diamonds — is where craftsmanship becomes poetry. The name alone tells you something: Papaya Wine. That's not an accident. Every strain we select, every product we name, reflects the sensory intention behind it. We want adults who choose Silly Nice to feel that we thought about them — their palate, their experience, their evening — before we ever put it in a package.

Brooklyn Deserves Better — And We're Here to Deliver It
Brooklyn's cultural renaissance is real. It's happening in the music venues, the art galleries, the restaurants, the barbershops, the community gardens, and yes — the dispensaries. Cannabis is not peripheral to that renaissance; it's part of its texture. And as the legal market matures, the brands that will matter are the ones that were never just about product — they were about people. About community. About showing up with excellence every single time.
We launched Silly Nice in March 2024 with a simple belief: that New Yorkers 21 and older who have always known quality deserve to access cannabis that reflects that standard through a legal, safe, and transparent marketplace. Fifteen months in, with our products in 150+ licensed dispensaries across New York State, that belief has been validated by the community itself. This isn't the end of our story. It's the part where things get really interesting.
If you're in Brooklyn, in Manhattan, on Long Island, upstate, or anywhere across New York — find us, try us, hold us accountable to the standard we've set. That accountability is what makes us better. And getting better — for our community, for this borough, for this city — is the only thing we're really here to do.
