Brooklyn Has Always Led the Way

If you want to understand where American culture is going, you watch Brooklyn. That's not pride talking — that's pattern recognition. From the Harlem Renaissance rippling outward into Bed-Stuy and Brownsville, to the birth of hip-hop in the parks of the outer boroughs, to the art galleries and music studios that transformed Bushwick into a global creative destination — Brooklyn has always been the laboratory where the future gets tested first. Cannabis legalization in New York is no different. It is the latest chapter in a long story about this city's refusal to accept a version of freedom that excludes its most creative, most resilient, most marginalized communities.

We are Silly Nice — a Black-owned, Veteran-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, family-run cannabis brand based right here in Brooklyn, New York. We launched in March 2024, and today our products are available in 150+ licensed adult-use dispensaries across New York State. We didn't build this company to sit on the sidelines of a cultural moment. We built it because we are that cultural moment. And when we look at Brooklyn's history, we see ourselves reflected back in every generation that dared to do something new without asking permission.

The Neighborhoods That Built the Narrative

You cannot talk about Brooklyn's renaissance without walking its streets in your mind. Crown Heights during the Carnival season. The record shops on Fulton Street that shaped the entire sound of East Coast rap. The murals climbing the walls of Bushwick that turned an industrial corridor into an open-air museum. The barbershops and beauty supply stores along Nostrand Avenue where ideas got exchanged as freely as opinions about last night's game. Brooklyn's culture has always been communal property — built collectively, owned collectively, celebrated collectively. Cannabis, at its best, operates the same way. It brings people together around something real.

New York's adult-use cannabis market didn't appear overnight. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act of 2021 was the result of decades of advocacy — largely led by Black and Brown New Yorkers who had disproportionately borne the consequences of criminalization. In Brooklyn alone, communities like East New York, Brownsville, and Crown Heights saw arrest rates for cannabis possession that no honest person could describe as fair or just. The communities that had been most harmed by prohibition were the ones who fought hardest for legalization, and they fought with the understanding that equity had to be baked into the new structure — not bolted on later as an afterthought.

For us, that history is personal. Shane Breen, our co-founder, served in the U.S. Army. He understands what it means to live under systems of rules that don't always reflect the values they claim to represent. He and his partner LeVar Thomas — together for 25 years, co-founders of Silly Nice — built this brand with both eyes open to that history. We didn't enter this market naively. We entered it with intention, knowing that what we were doing carried weight that extended far beyond product sales.

Equity as Architecture, Not Afterthought

New York's Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary program, which prioritized individuals with prior cannabis convictions for early licensing, was a meaningful step. It is not a perfect solution to decades of damage, but it is an acknowledgment that justice requires more than just unlocking a door — it requires helping people walk through it. We support every CAURD licensee, every social equity applicant, every operator who came up through communities that know this plant's real history. Brooklyn's cultural renaissance has always been about reclaiming narrative. Legal cannabis, done right, is an extension of that same reclamation.

Cannabis as Craft: Why Quality Is a Cultural Statement

Brooklyn has always had a complicated relationship with the word "craft." When the craft beer wave hit, some neighborhoods welcomed it. When artisan coffee took over, the conversations about gentrification and displacement got louder. Cannabis is navigating that same tension. For us, the answer has always been clear: craft doesn't belong to any one demographic. It belongs to whoever is willing to do the work to get it right. And we have done that work, obsessively, from the beginning.

Our products are small-batch, independently lab-tested, and sustainably packaged. Full Certificates of Analysis are available at sillynice.com/menu — because we believe transparency is not optional, it's the price of trust. Our Diamond Powder — 1 gram of ultra-refined THCa crystalline at 86.24% THC and 98.54% total cannabinoids, priced at $50 — represents what happens when craft meets science. Our Bubble Hash, solventless and ice-water extracted, comes in at 53.32% THC with 6.2% terpene content at $44, because terpenes are not an afterthought — they are the language the plant uses to speak to you. Every single product we make is a cultural statement about what Brooklyn's standards look like when they're applied to cannabis.

The Terpene Story: Brooklyn's Sensory Identity

Brooklyn has a sensory identity. It's the smell of Jamaican beef patties on a summer block. It's the sound of a sound system at a West Indian parade float. It's the texture of a wall that's been painted over so many times it has its own geography. Terpenes — the aromatic compounds that give cannabis its distinct flavor, aroma, and character — are this plant's version of that same layered identity. Our Frosted Hash Ball carries 5.7% terpene content at 67.34% THC, handmade and artisanal at $50. Our 510 Vape in Pink Stardust is built with 100% cannabis-derived terpenes — no botanical fillers, no shortcuts — at 81.96% THC for $40. When we talk about terpenes, we're talking about authenticity. And Brooklyn does not do fake.

A Black-Owned, Veteran-Owned Brand in the Heart of It All

Being Black-owned in Brooklyn's cannabis market is not a marketing angle for us — it is simply what we are. The same is true of being Veteran-owned. Shane's military service shaped his understanding of discipline, precision, and the cost of cutting corners. Those values are embedded in every gram of product we ship. LeVar's 25-year partnership with Shane has produced a business built on mutual accountability and a shared refusal to compromise on what matters. That's not corporate language — it's the plain truth of how we operate every single day.

Being LGBTQ+-owned means we have always understood what it feels like to occupy multiple identities in spaces that weren't originally designed to include you. That understanding drives us to build something that actually welcomes the full breadth of New York's communities — not just the ones that are easy to market to. Our customer base spans 21 to 75 years old, across every borough, every background. Brooklyn's cultural renaissance has always thrived because of its radical inclusivity. We are built in that same spirit.

What 150+ Dispensaries Across New York Means

When we say we're now available in 150+ licensed adult-use dispensaries statewide, that number carries meaning beyond distribution logistics. It means a veteran-owned, Black-owned, family-run brand from Brooklyn is competing — and winning — in one of the most competitive cannabis markets in the world. It means the standards we set, the pricing we committed to, and the community relationships we've built are resonating. Our 2G All-In-One in Alaskan Thunder Fuck — 2 grams, 82.46% THC, rechargeable via USB-C, at $80 — is sitting on shelves from the Lower East Side to Buffalo. Our Infused Flower in Papaya Wine, 3.5 grams at 51.22% THC with live resin and THCa diamonds, at $60 — is being passed around circles from Flatbush to Flushing. That's what scale looks like when it's built on real quality.

The Renaissance Is Not a Moment — It's a Movement

Cultural renaissances are not events you attend. They are movements you participate in. The Harlem Renaissance didn't end with a closing night gala — it rippled outward into the civil rights movement, into bebop, into Baldwin and Morrison and every artist who understood that art and justice are the same conversation. Brooklyn's ongoing renaissance — from the street art that put Bushwick on the map to the local food entrepreneurs who redefined what farm-to-table means in an urban context — follows the same logic. It is perpetual, layered, and always looking for its next expression.

Cannabis legalization, and specifically the emergence of brands like Silly Nice, is one of that movement's newest expressions. We are not here to be a novelty or a trend. We are here because this plant has real value for adults 21 and older who deserve access to high-quality, honestly made products from people who understand what it means to show up with integrity. Whether someone is unwinding after a long shift, connecting with friends on a rooftop in Crown Heights, or simply taking a moment to breathe in a city that rarely slows down — we want our products to be worthy of that moment.

Our Responsibility to What Comes Next

Brooklyn's best cultural exports have always known their responsibility to the generation coming up behind them. The producers who gave the next rapper a shot. The gallery owners who gave wall space to emerging artists. The chefs who hired from the community rather than outside of it. We think about that responsibility every time we make a product decision, every time we choose a dispensary partner, every time we communicate with our community. We are not trying to extract from this moment. We are trying to add something to it — something lasting, something honest, something that the next generation of New Yorkers will point to and say, that brand stood for something real.

Brooklyn, We Are Just Getting Started

Cannabis and Brooklyn's cultural renaissance are not parallel stories — they are the same story. A story about communities reclaiming what was taken from them, building on their own terms, and refusing to let the definition of quality or success be handed to them from the outside. We are Silly Nice, and this is our city as much as it is anyone's. We built this brand in 2024 with eyes wide open to history, and we are carrying it forward with the same discipline, creativity, and community focus that has defined every great Brooklyn movement before us.

If you're 21 or older and ready to experience what happens when cannabis craft meets real community intention, find us at a licensed dispensary near you. Every product we make is fully lab-tested, small-batch produced, and built to represent what Brooklyn's standards look like at their best. The full menu — with COAs, terpene breakdowns, THC percentages, and pricing — lives at sillynice.com/menu. Come see what we've been building. We made it for you.
